Asparagus Valley Potters, Western Massachusetts,
Nine potters in the Amherst, Northampton
and Greenfield areas open their homes and studios for the second annual
Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 & 30, from
10:00–5:00. This year features additional artists and locations throughout
the valley. We invite the public to view the various forms of pottery we
each produce and to watch potters at work. From functional to sculptural,
electric fired to wood fired, we are a diverse group of professional and
nationally known potters who make work to sell in a variety of venues
ranging from galleries, to juried craft shows, to open house studio sales.
This Pottery Trail is an offshoot of the Asparagus Valley Potters Guild,
established in 1976 back when the Pioneer Valley was equally known as the
Asparagus Valley due to the abundance of asparagus grown in the region.
Pottery Trail admission is free and
children are welcome. Individual potters will host a sale of their work at
each location, while many will also offer live demonstrations of throwing,
decorating and glazing their work. Look for distinctive Pottery Trail
roadside signs when leaving the main highways the weekend of the event.
Brochures with maps are available at each studio.
Enjoy a day browsing through the working
studios on a 35 mile driving tour of the scenic Connecticut River Valley.
Visit six of the nine studios and you are eligible to win a piece of pottery
valued at $75. The Pottery Trail is only 100 miles from Boston and 150 from
New York City. The area boasts the home of many fine inns, restaurants,
hiking trails, scenic and historic attractions, and is near the artistically
rich and spirited town of Northampton.
